Phoenix Pergola Add-Ons
Canopies, screens, fans and lights that make a pergola usable from noon to midnight.
Open rafters filter sun, but in a Phoenix July you may want more. A retractable fabric canopy adds solid shade overhead, and a drop screen on the west side cuts the low afternoon sun that rafters can't stop.
After dark, the same pergola becomes the place you eat and sit. String lights, LED strips tucked under the beams and an outdoor-rated ceiling fan make it comfortable on warm nights.
The same exempt-work list says that when utilities are run to a detached structure that's otherwise exempt, the utilities still need a permit. That's the part that matters when your pergola gets a fan, lights or an outlet, and our electrician handles it.

Fabric panels on cables that slide open or closed across the rafters.

Wet- or damp-rated fans mounted to a beam with a proper box.

String lights, LED strips and downlights on a switch or dimmer.

Mesh screens on the sun side that roll down in the afternoon.
| Problem | Add-on | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Hot at midday | Retractable canopy | Pull it back for winter sun |
| Low sun after 4 p.m. | Drop screen on the west side | Roll it up when you don't need it |
| Still, warm evenings | Outdoor ceiling fan | Needs power and a rated fan |
| Dark after sunset | String lights or LED strips | Hard-wired lights need an electrician |
Usually. We check the frame for strength and mounting points first, then quote the add-ons.
The City's exempt-work list says utilities run to an otherwise exempt detached structure need a permit. Our electrician handles that work and the permit when it applies.
Yes, retracting or removing fabric before high wind protects both the fabric and the frame. Most retractable canopies make that quick.
For many patios, yes. Hard-wired lights and fans are cleaner and can run on a switch, which needs an electrician.
Tell us what you want to add and whether the pergola is new or existing. We'll take a look and quote it.
